The
full layout requires over 1,750 square feet. It includes complete
locomotive facilities, two yards, a reversing loop and operating
turntable, cities, villages, and industries. There are rivers and
lakes, bridges and trestles, and tunnels. When completely assembled,
the layout provides an
excellent education in the historical importance and operation of the nation’s railroads.
The GCMRC was founded in 1987. It operated permanent display railroads,
first in Camarillo, and then later in Fillmore, Santa Paula and now at
our home in the Murphy Auto Museum in Oxnard. We have been viewed by
thousands of guests. Both layouts were dismantled and stored when the
spaces were no longer available. In August of 2000, the GCMRC
assembled, from stored modules, and operated an exhibition layout, 12
feet by 30 feet, at the Ventura County Fair. This was the first time in
many years that a model railroad had been a part of the Fair. Our last
viewing at the Ventura
County Fair was in August 2010, and the layout was at 15 feet by 36 feet.
