The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum, located in Baltimore, Md., will celebrate the rebirth of its signature 1884 roundhouse when it reopens to the public the weekend on November 13, 2004. Designed by E. Frances Baldwin, the roundhouse is a 22-sided polygon and is the world's largest circular industrial building.
During a snowstorm in February 2003, part of the roof collapsed under heavy snow, damaging some of the museum's most significant railroad locomotives and artifacts. Museum staff, along with teams of architects, engineers, and construction crews, worked tirelessly for 22 months to rebuild, restore, and reopen the building.
In addition to touring the restored structure, visitors can also view the B&O Museum's new exhibition galleries featuring items from the Smithsonian Institution's collection of railroad models, railroad china and silver, and railroad time pieces.
The museum is located at 901 West Pratt Street in Baltimore, Md., and is easily accessible from Interstate 95 and the Baltimore Beltway, I-695. Entrance to the museum grounds is located at the intersection of West Pratt Street and Poppleton Street.
